At 5 p.m. on Friday, November 27, Washington State's men's basketball team hosts Idaho on the Pullman campus. On the same day, Ferdinand's Ice Cream Shoppe is closed for Native American Heritage Day, Pullman Transit is on Holiday Service, and WSU's Thanksgiving vacation is in its last day. All of this sits within a short walk of McCroskey Hall and Stadium Way.
That Friday shows how the season works around here. Students leave on a date set by the WSU Registrar. The buses follow a city calendar, the Creamery keeps its own list of closures, and the athletics department schedules games without regard to any of them. These four schedules overlap for only a few days. For someone living next to campus, the useful dates are the ones where they don't line up.
Four calendars for the same week
WSU's Fall 2026 Thanksgiving vacation runs Monday, November 23 through Friday, November 27. No other institution on this list uses that exact window.
| Date | WSU classes | Pullman Transit | Ferdinand's | Jordan Schnitzer Museum of Art |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sun., Nov. 22 | Weekend | Thanksgiving Week Service | Closed on weekends | Closed on Sundays |
| Mon., Nov. 23 | Vacation | Thanksgiving Week Service | Open, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. | Closed during university breaks |
| Tue., Nov. 24 | Vacation | Thanksgiving Week Service | Open | Closed during university breaks |
| Wed., Nov. 25 | Vacation | Thanksgiving Week Service | Open | Closed during university breaks |
| Thu., Nov. 26 | Vacation | Closed | Closed | Closed |
| Fri., Nov. 27 | Vacation | Holiday Service | Closed | Closed during university breaks |
| Sat., Nov. 28 | Weekend | Thanksgiving Week Service | Closed on weekends | Not a posted break day |
The transit schedule comes from the city's Pullman Transit service calendar. Ferdinand's hours and dated closures are on the WSU Creamery's hours page. The museum lists Tuesday through Saturday hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and says it closes on Sundays, Mondays, holidays and university breaks. It hasn't posted a closure notice specific to 2026. The table applies that general policy to the Registrar's dates, so treat the museum column as a reading of the policy, not a posted schedule.
Ferdinand's ends up with three open weekdays in the middle of a week when campus has almost no students. The bus calendar switches to its Thanksgiving schedule a day before vacation starts and keeps it for a day after vacation ends.
One campus spot is off the list altogether. The WSU Bear Center offers outdoor public viewing from about April through October, when the bears aren't hibernating. By Thanksgiving that season is over.
Student-section seats on the two vacation-week games
Two of the men's home games fall during Thanksgiving vacation. Sam Houston plays on Tuesday, November 24 at 6 p.m., and Idaho plays on Friday, November 27 at 5 p.m.
WSU Athletics addresses those dates directly on its 2026-27 men's basketball mini plans page. The "Catch Up with the Cougs" plan costs $26 for all five home non-conference games. You pick your own seats for the Davidson game, and seats for the rest are assigned at random. The page also says tickets for the Sam Houston and Idaho games "may be allocated in the student section due to those games being played during Thanksgiving break."
That means a plan holder could end up in the student section for those two games. The same page lists three-game plans starting at $45, five-game plans starting at $75, and a Crimson Mini Plan starting at $84 that includes Gonzaga, San Diego State and Utah State.
The schedule pages call these games home games but don't name the arena in the lines we reviewed. Check the venue on your ticket.
Getting there when some routes stop
For a McCroskey household, the Friday game is when the transit calendar matters most. Pullman Transit runs Holiday Service on November 27 and doesn't run at all on Thanksgiving Day.
The city also posts a WSU-break route table. It shows the Blue, Loop, Silver and Paradise routes running weekdays from 6:30 a.m. to 6:40 p.m., and the Community Service Express from 6:35 a.m. to 6:40 p.m. It lists the Campus Route and ApartmentLand Express as not operating. The Wheat and Lentil routes run on weekends and holidays from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. The map linked from that page is labeled 2025-2026, and the table has no 2026-27 effective date. Confirm route hours with the city before planning around them.
If those hours carry over, the holiday routes would stop at 5:30 p.m., half an hour after the Idaho game starts. That's a good reason to plan the walk home or a ride ahead of time for that night.
December runs on the student clock again
Fall Service comes back on November 29 and lasts through December 19. Students are back for the last two weeks of classes. Instruction ends Friday, December 11, and finals run December 14 through 18. These three weeks hold more public events than any other stretch of the season, and the biggest day is Saturday, December 5.
- 7:30 to 11 a.m.: The Kiwanis Club of Pullman's 68th annual Pancake Breakfast & Music Fest at Lincoln Middle School, with breakfast, local performers and a silent auction.
- 2 p.m.: WSU women's basketball hosts Portland.
- 4 to 8 p.m.: Holiday Fest, presented by Visit Pullman and the Pullman Chamber of Commerce. It's free and includes a community tree lighting, an artisan marketplace, Santa, storytime, cultural performances, and cocoa and cookies.
The Holiday Fest listing doesn't give a venue yet and says more details are coming. In 2025, The Daily Evergreen reported that the tree lighting was at Pine Street Plaza. That's last year's location, and the 2026 site hasn't been confirmed.
The men's team plays North Dakota State at home the next day, Sunday, December 6, with tip-off time still to be announced. The women host Eastern Washington on Tuesday, December 8 at 6 p.m.
The following weekend has a similar overlap. Palouse Choral Society performs "Rejoice in the Light" at Simpson United Methodist in Pullman on Friday, December 11 and Saturday, December 12, both at 7:30 p.m. The program features the Symphonic Choir and Youth Choir singing carols from around the world. Tickets weren't on sale yet when we checked the Palouse Choral Society concerts page. That Saturday morning, WSU holds its Fall 2026 commencement at 10 a.m. in Beasley Coliseum. Expect graduation crowds around campus before the evening concert.
The women's home game against UNLV on Wednesday, December 16 at 6 p.m. falls during finals week, and it's the last home game on this calendar.
After December 20: Winter Service and the Creamery's last days
Pullman Transit switches to Winter Service on Sunday, December 20, the first Sunday after finals end. It runs December 20 through 24, closes on Christmas Day, runs again December 26 through 31, closes on New Year's Day, and continues January 2 through 9.
Ferdinand's stays open a few days into the quiet stretch. Monday, December 21 through Wednesday, December 23 are regular weekdays on its posted schedule. It then closes for winter break from December 24 through January 3, 2027. The Creamery notes that all of these dates are subject to change.
If you're sending Cougar Gold as a gift, the in-store window and the shipping windows don't match. The Creamery's shipping dates page shows Thanksgiving orders shipping the week of November 9, orders for the first week of December shipping the week of November 30, and orders for the second week of December shipping the week of December 7, 2026. Its Cougar Cheese FAQ recommends getting Christmas orders in by Thanksgiving. Later orders are accepted, but Christmas delivery isn't guaranteed. Ferdinand's sells Cougar Cheese in person. The Creamery also lists other Pullman retailers that carry it when the shop is closed, and suggests calling ahead to check stock.
Before any of that, Ferdinand's has one more Saturday opening. It plans to open on WSU's last home football Saturday, November 14 against Colorado State, with hours not yet announced. After that, the shop keeps its weekday-only hours through the Thanksgiving and winter closures.
Mick Nazerali has lived through more than four decades of these academic cycles in Pullman, and the student calendar affects home sales near campus as much as it affects bus routes.
